Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 Review – Is it Worth buying?

First came the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 and as announced, today was the turn of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2. The new smartwatch of the Korean brand is now official and comes with an electrocardiogram and more extra health functions. Although without doubt, the interesting thing is its touch frame, which allows you to navigate the screen without requiring a rotating bezel as in other previous models.

The Active models of the Samsung Galaxy Watch focus on sport and wellness. The first version of this sportier watch came a while ago and in Xataka we could analyze it. In this new generation, they are improved and include some features to catch up on what is expected of a high-end watch/sport.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 brings in its interior, like the first generation, the Exynos 9110 processor and a RAM of 768 MB or 1.5 GB, depending on whether the model we choose has LTE or not. It is accompanied by 4 GB of storage, perhaps insufficient for certain situations such as storing music locally for sports without carrying the phone.

The clock has as we can see two sizes. This size despite varying only in 4 millimeters in diameter and 0.2 inches of screen is usually noticeable when wearing the watch on the wrist. The change in size also affects the amount of RAM as we have seen the battery, which can be 340 mAh or 247 mAh

A health-centric update

The interesting news of this new Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is found in the aspect of health. The first major change is the electrocardiogram, through this sensor the watch sends electrical impulses to the heart to make a deeper reading of the organ and detect possible arithmias. Apple introduced this feature for the first time in a consumer technology device for the masses last September 2018 with the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 4.

The electrocardiogram in a device for the masses can be a double-edged sword. Although it can detect possible anomalies, it must also be taken into account that it is not as accurate as a professional electrocardiogram used in hospitals and clinics. Many times it can generate false positives. Regardless, it is an interesting function, although it will have to be approved by the authorities of each region or country to be used, so it is possible that Samsung will activate it in future updates when they have the authorization in each market where it is sold.

On the other hand, Samsung has added to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 automatic fall detection. Through this functionality, the accelerometer sensors of the clock are able to analyze when a person has fallen by accident and, if necessary, call emergencies.

We also found improvements as far as software is concerned. Samsung indicates that the watch is now able to record 39 different workouts, of which 7 can detect them automatically. The clock will display information relevant to the user throughout the day and focused on the field of health and well-being. As a novelty, it also incorporates improvements in meditation and stress, with the association with the Calm meditation app.

A touch bezel to simulate the traditional sphere

The rotating bezel has returned to Samsung watches. It has not returned in a mechanical format as in previous generations of Samsung smartwatches but in a somewhat different way. Now we find a touch bezel that surrounds the screen and allows you to navigate by touching it as if it were a physical sphere.

Touch Bezel is the name that Samsung has decided to give this watch feature. Just by touching the touch frame of the watch you can control the Tizen interface to interact with the watch.

The watch is available in two different materials for the case: aluminum or stainless steel. In both cases, we find different colors and also interchangeable straps according to each model and watch style.

For the rest, in the design, we hardly found any changes compared to the original model. It maintains the same structure of the box and brings two side buttons to control the clock in addition to its touch screen and the aforementioned Touch Bezel.

Versions and prices of the Galaxy Watch Active 2

Galaxy Watch Active 2

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 comes in different versions, models and options. On the one hand, we can choose the size, which can be 40 mm or 44 mm. On the other hand, we can choose a version with or without LTE, to have an Internet connection without having the phone nearby. Then there is the subject of materials and colors, depending on whether we choose it in steel or aluminum the available colors vary. There are models in blue/gray, models in black/silver and models in pink/gold.

At the moment Samsung has not announced the date of availability or the price in Spain. In the United States, it will arrive from September 26 with open reservations starting on September 6. Its starting price is $ 279.99 for the basic 40mm aluminum model without LTE. The price goes up 20 dollars for the 44 mm model and the rest of the models vary their prices according to the size, the material of the box, the straps or the LTE connection. The price in euros is probably similar, although it will vary slightly depending on the country you arrive at.
